Why Mobility Matters More As We Get Older (And Why It Doesn't Have to Feel Like Hard Work)
Do you groan a little when you get up off the sofa? Feel stiff first thing in the morning? Find it harder to turn your head when reversing the car?
You're not alone. As we get older, our joints and muscles naturally tighten up, and busy lives spent sitting at desks, in cars and on our phones don't help.
The good news is that mobility is something you can improve at any age, and it doesn't have to be hard work.
Mobility isn't the same as flexibility
Flexibility is how far a muscle can stretch. Mobility is how well your joints move through their full range, with control. You don't need to touch your toes, just move comfortably through everyday life.
Why it matters
It keeps everyday life easy. Getting up off the floor, climbing stairs, gardening, playing with the grandchildren: all of these rely on good mobility. Keeping your joints moving now helps you stay independent for longer.
It helps with stiffness around menopause. Falling oestrogen in our 40s and 50s can affect joints and muscles, and many women notice more aches and stiffness, especially in the morning. Gentle, regular movement is one of the kindest things you can do for your body.
It improves your posture. Tight hips, rounded shoulders and a stiff upper back are common when we sit a lot. Opening up these areas helps you stand taller and can ease everyday aches.
It calms your mind. Slow, flowing movement with deep breathing helps your body switch from "busy and stressed" into "rest and relax". Many people find they sleep better after a gentle stretch session.
Try this today
Shoulder rolls: roll your shoulders back slowly 5 times, then let them drop.
Side reach: reach one arm up and over for 3 slow breaths each side.
Roll down: stand tall and slowly roll down as far as feels comfortable, knees bent, then roll back up.
Two minutes, and you'll already feel looser.
